Firewall
Implementation
With
any full time Internet connection whether it be a T-1, cable modem or
DSL connection, your first line of defense should be a firewall.
Firewalls can be implemented as hardware appliances or software and act
as a "security guard" monitoring every bit of traffic that
enters and leaves your network. Their main task is to enforce the
security policy that is defined by your organization. This
includes what traffic should be allowed into your network from the
Internet as wall as what traffic should be allowed out to the
Internet. Why would you want to stop outgoing traffic, you
say? For example, if you allow FTP access from your private
network to the outside world, you make it significantly easier for an
employee which is thinking about leaving your organization to send a
copy of your customer database or other sensitive data to the outside
world where it is no longer in your control. Firewalls by
themselves are not a complete security solution but rather play an
integral role in a well developed security plan. Secure-WAN
has knowledge and experience with all levels of firewalls from
cost-effective SOHO (small office/home office) routers up through
enterprise-level Cisco Pix firewalls and can help to find and implement
a solution which is appropriate for your situation and budget.
