Wireless
LAN (WLAN) Implementation
Wireless LANs are a wonderful invention that
have come on the scene somewhat recently. They bring with them the
freedom to work from anywhere in your home or office while still having
access to the Internet as well as your other network resources such as
files and printers. Unfortunately, they also bring with them a
network security hole large enough to drive a truck through. Many
people will simply connect a wireless access point (WAP) to their
existing wired network and will be happy when they find they are able to
connect to it using its default settings. While this may seem at
first to be an accomplishment, it is actually a detriment because 90% of
these devices are configured with NO security by default! This
means that your neighbors or ex-employees can access your network as
well as anyone who happens to be driving by looking for open network
(don't laugh-this is not far fetched. It is called War Driving and
is a favorite pastime of hackers). All that money you have spent
on the firewall that protects you from the Internet will do you
absolutely no good if your WAP is inside of the firewall and is
unsecured. Luckily, there are a number of security options
available to lock down wireless networks and allow flexibility with
security.
